On the Usage and the Origin of the Modern Chinese Adverb Huohuo

现代汉语副词“活活”的三种义项和用法之间不存在引申关系。在汉语史中,双音节“活活”的所有意义和用法几乎都能在单音节“活”的意义和用法中找到系统对应,这表明双音节“活活”是不同意义和用法的单音节“活”经由重叠这一语法手段所共同征用的同一语言编码形式。

There is no derivational relationship among the three senses and usages of modern Chinese adverb huohuo.Historically,the counterparts of almost all the senses and usages of the bi-syllabic huohuo can be systematically found in those of the mono-syllabic huo in ancient Chinese,which indicates that the bi-syllabic huohuo is the same coded linguistic form derived from the different mono-syllabic huo respectively through reduplication.
