Masculinity in Wide Sargasso Sea

该文基于瑞文·康奈尔的男性气质理论,参照《简·爱》,从性别结构和性别构型两个角度深入剖析了《茫茫藻海》中罗切斯特男性气质的演变过程。一方面,性别关系结构四维度下,置身于西印度群岛的罗切斯特的男性气质面临前所未有的挑战,并显露出严重的危机倾向。另一方面,在应对危机和挑战的过程中,罗切斯特积极应对,调整并重塑了自身男性气质,从《茫茫藻海》中的边缘性男性气质衍化成《简·爱》中的霸权性男性气质。该文通过分析小说中罗切斯特男性气质的危机及积极构建,从而揭示作者重书《简·爱》中被遮蔽的历史的创作意图。

Based on Raven Cornell's theory of masculinity and referring to Jane Eyre,this paper analyzes the evolution of Rochester's masculinity in Wide Sargasso Sea from two perspectives:gender structure and construction.For one thing,under the four dimensions of the gender relations structure,Rochester's masculinity faces unprecedented challenges and serious crisis tendencies in the West Indies setting.For another,in coping with crises and challenges,Rochester actively adjusted and reshaped his masculinity,evolving from the marginalized masculinity in Wide Sargasso Sea into the hegemonic one in Jane Eyre.By analyzing the crisis and construction of Rochester's masculinity in the novel,the author's intention of rewriting the obscured history in Jane Eyre is clarified.
