作为“一项学术研究”的中国小说史建构基于现代社会情境及其文化语境,通过将“四大奇书”用作章节标题、以现代文化重构“四大奇书”的历史特征、探讨“四大奇书”的具体指代等方式,对“四大奇书”进行符合现代审美、知识习惯及文化需求的重构,从事实判断与价值判断两方面展开通俗小说的现代转化。此举旨在建立一种能够有效引导读者理解通俗小说的机制,具有某种程度的知识“规训”导向,是现代知识文化建构的重要一环。因此,探讨中国小说史如何针对通俗小说展开事实陈述的同时,亦须探究以知识构建的形式回应现代文化诉求等小说史编纂思路的历史意义。
