定县实验作为20世纪中国乡村建设运动的代表,常被冠以西化的标签,近来其传统维度虽偶被论及,但既不系统,也不深入。通过对定县实验的“新民”目标、推行平民教育的方式以及实验中知识分子的精神动力考察发现,在这些方面定县实验均使用了大量的传统文化资源,这意味着定县实验并非“全盘西化”的乡村建设,而是多方面的工作都自觉地从中国传统文化中汲取资源。定县实验对中国传统文化的借鉴并不是因袭守旧,而是秉持现代化的立场,体现着创造性转化的精神,从而推进了对定县实验更全面的认识,也为如何对传统文化加以创造性转化以更好地为现代化服务提供了借鉴。

The Ding County Experiment,as a representative of the 20th-century Chinese rural construction movement,is often labeled with westernization.Although its traditional aspects have been occasionally mentioned recently,these discussions are neither systematic nor profound.By examining the“new citizen”objectives of the Ding County Experiment,the methods of popular education implemented,and the spiritual motivations of the intellectuals involved in the experiment,it is observed that a substantial amount of traditional cultural resources were utilized in these areas.This indicates that the Ding County Experiment was not a wholesale westernization of rural construction but rather a multifaceted endeavor that consciously drew upon resources from China’s traditional culture.The experiment’s reference to Chinese traditional culture was not a conservative adherence to old ways but was instead grounded in a modernization perspective,embodying the spirit of creative transformation.This has advanced a more comprehensive understanding of the Ding County Experiment and provided a reference for how to creatively transform traditional culture to better serve the purposes of modernization.
