This paper analyzes the image of overseas Chinese as fighters in Garcia's Monkey Hunting and Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao through the bifocal perspectives of historical analysis and literary studies.Garcia and Diaz blend historical facts with literary representation and depict overseas Chinese as fighters against racial oppression,gender discrimination,and power violence.In Monkey Hunting,Garcia depicts Cuban Chinese who rise against racial oppression and gender discrimination through intertextuality,the combination of text with paratext and subtext,and the literary representation of"androgyny".In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,Diaz portrays kind and upright Dominican Chinese fighting against power abuse by combining"telling"with"showing".The image of overseas Chinese as fighters can subvert the stereotyped images of Chinese,offer insights into the experiences of overseas Chinese in Latino countries,and provide reference for the construction of positive Chinese and China images.
