Critics at home and abroad have explored the meaning of the plot in Virginia Woolf's The Journal of Mistress Joan Martyn from various perspectives to reveal the humble position of the angel in the house under the collusion of imperial historical writing and patriarchy.However,this paper uncovers the dual narration in the novel based on word frequency and concordance plot of the corpus tool AntConc 4.2.0.In the covert progression,although Joan Martyn's mother who is shaped upon Woolf's mother safeguards patriarchy,she is independent,strong and noble.The dual narration not only indicates Woolf's recognition of maternal character in her writing,but also shows her challenge to the characterization of English novels in the Edwardian era.
