The transmission of Mencius abroad should attempt to reveal the peculiarly Chinese features of its canon,in addition to highlighting what China has in common with Western countries.Through a combination of translation and interpretation,it is important to explain how canonical texts such as Mencius reflect the patterns of Chinese history and society,with particular attention to the specific contexts of authors and their works in history.Hermeneutics should clearly outline the author’s social background and the actual set of circumstances to which his ideas were originally aimed.Any translation mustconvey the original work’s individuality.It should not only enable readers to perceive the cultural context that lays beneath the ancient text,but also emphasize the authentically Chinese nature ofits ideas.
