曾国藩是中国近代重要的中兴名臣,他的功、德、言对中国近代以及后世都产生了很大影响,他也是湖湘文化的代表性符号。曾国藩作为政治家形象在近代文人日记中多有记录,虽然单个日记可能是只言片语,但整体上考察近代文人日记,其中的政治家曾国藩形象是鲜活生动的。日记中的政治家曾国藩“用兵在人而不在器”,也实践了“取夷智、制夷器、以夷制夷”等进步的洋务思想,对近代洋务运动以及中国近代化都具有重要意义。

Zeng Guofan was an important political figure of China in late 19th century.His contributions,virtues and words had a great influence on China both at that time and later,and he was also a representative of Huxiang Culture.His image appeared many times in modern literati diaries.Although a single diary may just have a brief description,if observed as a whole,his image was lively and vivid.His ideas“The victory of war depended on the army rather than the weapons”and“We should learn from foreign countries to compete with them”were of significance for westernization movement at that time and the modernization of China.
