Bronze bells, both as musical instruments and decorations, have been discovered as early as the late Longshan Culture period at the Taosi site.Through the development during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, they became common funerary objects in ancient burials.Compared to the Central Plains area, the bronze bells unearthed in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau exhibit significant regional characteristics with rich diversity in shapes and types. However, special discussions on the bronze bells of this region have been limited. Therefore, the author conducts a preliminary investigation into the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau's early bronze bells, examining their forms, distributions, ages, and the inter-regional cultural links they represent. The paper indicates that the earliest bronze bells unearthed in this region can be traced back to the Haimenkou site in Jianchuan County,Western Yunnan, potentially dating to as early as the Spring and Autumn period.During the late Warring States period to the Western Han Dynasty, there was a significant increase in the number of bronze bells in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. However,a gradual decline took place since the Eastern Han period.Comparison with other regions indicates that the bronze bells of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau were likely influenced by the bronze cultures of Western Sichuan Plateau, the Chengdu Plain, the Anning River Basin, and the Central Plains, while they formed their regional characteristics in the process of development and evolution. The study of bronze bells excavated from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau contributes to deepening the understanding of the bronze culture of Southwestern minorities.
