The“island”motif has written acolourful chapter in German philosophy and literature in the twenty-first century.Sloterdijk,a famous German philosopher,recalled the three globalisations in human civilisation and used“islanding”and“globalisation”as metaphors for the relationship between human self-protection and the development of territories.After the shattering of the grand“crystal palace”of globalisation in his writing,individuals seek self-immunity in the form of bubbles.German writer Inger-Maria Mahlke's novel Rechnung offen,conceived against the backdrop of the 2008 global financial crisis,depicts an island of existence pushed to the edge of the city by the wave of globalisation.With the help of multiple narrative techniques,Mahlke not only shows the sorrows and joys of a group of people falling in their respective social circles,but also keenly penetrates the bubble-like“insular culture”of contemporary Germans,unfolding a picture of German realism in the era of globalisation.
