The Nanling Ethnic Corridor has served as a vital passage for population migrations, species dispersal, commodity circulation, document transmission, and military campaigns throughout Chinese history. It is also a central hub for the distribution of traditional villages belonging to various ethnic groups.GIS analysis tools were utilized to investigate the spatial distribution and influencing mechanisms of 681 traditional villages. The results indicate that traditional villages in the Nanling mountainous region are characterized by their large numbers, widespread but obviously uneven and highly concentrated spatial distribution. This pattern is attributed to a multitude of natural factors, including topography, altitude, and hydrological environment,as well as socio-economic factors such as transportation conditions, ethnic distribution patterns, economic environments, and governmental policies.Based on these distribution conditions and influencing factors, recommendations are proposed for the inter-regional and integrated protection of traditional villages in the Nanling mountain areas.Specifically, these include recognizing traditional villages through approval and registration, fostering cross-regional governmental cooperation grounded in inter-regional coordination mechanisms, and exploring integrated development pathways between traditional village preservation and rural revitalization.
