Among the contemporary British novelists, lan McEwan's novels have a profound revelation of emotional problems.Different from previous studies, this essay argues that what is shown in Saturday is not just the scientific and technological civ-ilization or urban culture themselves that cause the heroine Henry Perowne's emotional crisis and Saturday presents not just the singular emotional crisis of""anxiety",but a web of multiple emotions intertwined with emotional confusion and anxiety, indifference and fear. The instability of political situation, the decline of religious civilization, and the threat of aging and death are the root that cause Perowne's such complex emotions.By tracing Perowne's emotional journey, the author finally discovers that his epistemology has undergone a subtle change towards the other, the religious belief and the reason.Perowne's journey of emotional redemption highlights the humanist value of moral emotion. It has realistic significance for contemporary urbanite who are financially affluent but emotionally starving.
