Engaging with the World and Practical Application:Society and Culture in the Late Qing People's Mirror Pictorial

《人镜画报》是一份以营利和传播艺术为辅、以启迪民众和推动政治与社会改革为主的清末报刊。该报从政治、社会、文化三个层面让民众认识清政府的腐败无能、社会改良的急切以及西方博物学和我国传统文化。为了更好地传播画报图像,体现新学的本质,该报参考了中国传统绘画、西方写实版画以及津派画风,建构出一种区别于《点石斋画报》的图像风格。

The People's Mirror Pictorial was a late Qing newspaper that,while also aiming for profit and the dissemination of art,primarily sought to enlighten the public and promote political and social reforms.The newspaper exposed the public to the corruption and incompetence of the Qing government,the urgency of social reform,as well as Western natural science and traditional culture from three dimensions:political,social,and cultural.To better disseminate the illustrations and reflect the essence of new learning,the newspaper drew on traditional Chinese painting,Western realistic printmaking,and the Tianjin school of painting style,constructing an image style distinct from the exquisite and elegant style of Dianshizhai Pictorial.
