辜鸿铭《论语》英译中的文化再生产

A Cultural Reproduction Study of Ku Hungming’s English Version of Lunyu

借助布迪厄的文化生产理论,探析辜鸿铭英译《论语》的可能性,并结合文本分析,研究辜氏如何采用新的翻译路径实现儒家文化在西方文化生产场的再生产。结果表明,辜鸿铭通过重构儒家思想核心概念、非神圣化儒家人物形象、印证儒家思想普适性等“颠覆性”举措,对儒家思想文化、形象文化、精神文化进行再诠释,从而满足欧洲读者对儒学的强烈求知欲,提高中华文化在世界文化生产场的话语权。故此,中国传统文化典籍对外译介应精选文本、巧妙抉择策略,并加强各方合作,以扩大中华文化在世界之林的传播与传承。

Based on Bourdieu’s cultural production theory,this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the possible reasons for Ku’s English translation of Lunyu,proving the correctness and possibility of his intention of retranslation.Moreover,the textual analysis of Ku’s version demonstrates that he reinvented Confucian culture through subversive strategies,including reconstructing Confucianism’s core concepts,de-sacralizing Confucian characters,and confirming Confucianism’s universality.All this satisfies the European public’s strong desire for understanding Confucianism and enhances the voice of Chinese culture in the world’s cultural production field.Therefore,the translation of traditional Chinese cultural classics needs to pay attention to text selection,strategy choice,and cooperation among all participants of translation activities to enlarge the scope of dissemination and enhance the inheritance effect of Chinese culture in the Western world.
