Using magnetite powder,a magnetic carrier was prepared using a"one-step"production process of ball milling and surface acid reaction.Characterization analysis showed that the magnetic carrier maintained good magnetic response, and the surface layer generated active components of hydroxyl ferric sulfate.Compared to magnetite powder, the BET surface area of the magnetic carrier increased by 2.8 times and the Langmuir surface area increased by 6.9 times, which could enhance the coagulation and adsorption of pollutants in water.Through a pilot test system of a magnetic cyclone clarifier with a treatment capacity of 40 t/d,three processes of coagulation precipitation, magnetic coagulation precipitation, and magnetic carrier enhanced coagulation were compared. After replacing PAC and magnetite powder with magnetic carrier in the magnetic coagulation process, the average COD of the effluent was 34.7 mg/L and the total phosphorus of the effluent was 0.30 mg/L,which was close to the removal rate of COD and total phosphorus in the magnetic coagulation process. This indicated that magnetic carrier enhanced coagulation could achieve the effluent target of magnetic coagulation, with less sludge production and easier operation and management.
