GREEN EMBANKMENTS Outlook Weekly 9 September In mid-September,the Maqu wetlands in Gansu Province are a picturesque scene of lush grasslands stretching towards the horizon like a green carpet,with rivers and waterways shining under the late summer sunshine.Revered as a cradle of civilisation,the Yellow River originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and flows through nine provinces and autonomous regions,including Qinghai,Sichuan,Gansu,Ningxia,Inner Mongolia,Shanxi,Shaanxi,Henan,and Shandong,and impacts the lives of 420 million people.
