Genre paintings, which took the content of daily life as their object of expression, became an independent painting discipline in the Netherlands in the 17th century, focusing on the expression of daily life, and were mostly used for interior decoration. In addition to depicting scenes of daily life in great detail, these paintings often contain a wealth of allegorical meaning. The erotic content of Dutch paintings has already been explored from the perspectives of sociology and iconography. This essay intends to discuss the erotic connotations of Dutch genre paintings from the three perspectives of the association between Dutch paintings and classical literature and theatre, the upper class’s own display and the ambiguity of the lower class’s interpretation of the genre paintings.
