This article attempts to analyze the translation of the first six chapters of Journey to the West by Théodore Pavie in 1857 and reveals one of the French Sinology’s research methods on Chinese novels from the perspective of Orientalism.Pavie grew up in France during the Romantic period, when the development of Orientalism was promoted by Romanticism and supported by societal leaders, which provided the objective conditions for the translation of Journey to the West. The text used by Pavie for his translation is the Zhengdao and the Zhenquan versions that were popular in the Qing dynasty.Although these two versions give an alchemical interpretation of Journey to the West,Pavie regarded the novel as a Buddhist text. This view may seem absurd, but in light of the development of Indology and Sinology within Orientalism at that time,it is actually excusable. In Pavie’s time,French Sinologists did not conduct in-depth research on Chinese Taoism and Chinese Buddhism,so they overemphasized the influence of Indian religions on Chinese culture.French academic research had keenly revealed the influence of Indian tradition on the development of Chinese popular fiction.
