The"ark"in The Russian Ark is often used as a metaphor,and interpretations of the film,therefore,focus on the metaphorical meaning of the Hermitage Museum as an"ark".Metaphors are mythological,spiritual,and symbolic,but as the most important object of the film,the Hermitage Museum has a materiality that embraces the heterogeneity and fragmentation that is the norm when it functions as a public space.The practices of the film's diverse visitors suggest the existence of non-elite cultures outside the Ark,and the metaphor of the Ark/Russian culture becomes a metonymy.The historical narrative of The Russian Ark thus acquires an openness that distances it from the romantic nostalgia for Russian culture implied by the title of the film.
