Irish writer John Banville contemplates the relationship between self and body in Birchwood, and the embodiment of the self becomes the core for understanding this work. The narrator,Gabriel, attempts to write a story about self, and his narrative is composed of a series of embodied experiences, positioning body as the origin of self and constructing a narrative around“body-self”.On one hand,Banville writes about the exhaustion of self, where the degeneration and uncontrollability of the body result in self-anxiety.On the other hand,Banville portrays a narrative of self-restoration,where the adjustment of the body facilitates the integration of self, allowing the self to develop independence and bring the self, submerged by the“text”,reemerge in reality. The work demonstrates a neorealist approach to writing about the body, endowing the body with the ability to construct the self-narrative,reflecting Banville's consideration of how to transcend the limitations of language through embodiment.
