In recent years, with the rapid advancements in technology, the imperative for cross-organizational and crosstemporal virtual collaboration has become increasingly apparent for the efficient operation of engineering projects. Thanks to building information modeling(BIM),virtual collaboration has emerged as a highly effective approach for team members to transcend spatial limitations and engage in real-time interactions. However, the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of engineering project teams presents negative knowledge behaviors identified as critical impediments to successful virtual collaboration. As a result, there is an urgent need for solutions to the adverse effects of knowledge hiding on the collaborative processes among team members.Furthermore, the impact of individual knowledge behaviors on team collaboration efficiency exhibits diverse mechanisms.Prior research has indicated that the ramifications of knowledge hiding extend beyond the deterioration of team member relationships;they also give rise to the depletion of organizational knowledge reserves and hinder the synthesis of other resources that rely on knowledge.Hence this paper adopts a conceptual framework based on the social exchange theory and resource-based theory to investigate the impact and underlying mechanism of knowledge hiding on virtual collaboration effectiveness.Additionally,it examines the mediating role of different process capabilities between knowledge hiding and virtual collaboration effectiveness. This paper follows the social exchange theory and resource-based theory, and integrates knowledge hiding, virtual collaboration, process dual capability and team stability into a unified framework.Through the construction of the adjusted mediation model,it explores the impact mechanism of knowledge hiding on virtual collaboration within the context of BIM and analyzes the mediating role of process dual capability between knowledge hiding and virtual collaboration effectiveness. It then investigates the boundary effect of"knowledge hiding-process dual capability-virtual collaboration effectiveness"and explores the moderating role of team stability on the relationship between knowledge and process.Using a three-step approach, the study first examines the impact of knowledge hiding behavior within engineering project teams on virtual collaboration effectiveness, considering two relevant variables:knowledge hiding and virtual collaboration effectiveness in the context of BIM application;secondly,it introduces process dual capability, specifically process standardization and process agility, which are related to the workflow,to investigate if process dual capability acts as a mediating factor between knowledge hiding and virtual collaboration effectiveness;finally,it introduces the concept of team stability and explores its potential moderating effect on the relationship between knowledge hiding and the impact of process dual capability on virtual collaboration effectiveness. This study employs a dataset of 325 survey responses from engineering project teams in the context of BIM application. To ensure the reliability and validity of the proposed model, rigorous validation is conducted through hierarchical regression analysis. The findings of the study reveal that knowledge hiding among engineering project teams exerts a considerable adverse impact on virtual collaboration effectiveness.Additionally, process binariness partially acts as a mediator between knowledge hiding and virtual collaboration effectiveness. Moreover, team stability not only has a negative moderating effect on the association between knowledge hiding and process binariness but also attenuates the mediating effect of process binariness, giving rise to a moderated mediation effect that subsequently influences virtual collaboration effectiveness. This paper focuses on knowledge hiding and virtual collaboration effectiveness as the research subjects to enrich the study of their relationship in the context of the application of BIM in the engineering domain.Unlike previous studies, this paper integrates Social Exchange Theory and Resource-Based View theory to construct the conceptual framework based on these two different theories. It comprehensively analyzes the impact mechanism of knowledge hiding on virtual collaboration effectiveness from different perspectives in a virtual environment, expands the influence of knowledge management's background on virtual collaboration effectiveness, emphasizes the negative effects of knowledge-hiding behavior, and provides new theoretical perspectives for research in the field of knowledge management. The empirical analysis supports the conclusions of this paper, strengthens the empirical research foundation under the combination of these two theories, and provides new perspectives and empirical evidence to enhancing virtual collaboration effectiveness in engineering project teams within a virtual environment. The research findings in this paper are of guiding significance for the optimization of collaborative activities in engineering teams.
