As a prominent Scottish poet,W.N.Herbert discloses the complexity of contemporary Scottish poetry and culture through the duality in language, style, and theme of his works. This paper examines Herbert's poetry as an ethnography of contem-porary Scotland and explores his understanding of Scottishness. He rewrites classic works of British poetry in Scots and reflects on mainstream culture and values in contemporary Britain from a Scottish perspective.Incorporating the history, language, and culture of Scotland into the contemporary British poetic tradition,Herbert depicts the historical development of Scotland and creates cultural symbols for contemporary Scotland in his poetry.Herbert's achievement in poetry makes Scottish language and culture more influ-ential in contemporary Britain.
