Philippe Forest's documentary novel L'Enfant eternel recounts the death of the author's only daughter, who suffered from cancer.Focused on childhood il-ness,the novel unveils pertinent societal issues such as the coldness of medical discourse, the dominance of medicine over afflicted children, the veiled violence in treatment, and the glorification of suffering. At the same time, the multiple cultural connotations associ-ated with sick children, like innocence mixed with suffering and the future found amidst tragedy, add depth to the narrative.Furthermore,Forest's writing concerns the function of literature. The work preserves his memory about his daughter and allows him to survive in pain.In this sense, writing the work healed Forest. Moreover, the extensive employment of intertextuality allows the novel to resonate with its readers through the universal theme of parental love.
