From the 17th to the 18th century, the West began to pay attention to and study the layout and imperial image of the capital city of China. From early imagination to on-site observation and drawing, the image of Beijing gradually presents a coexistence of reality and imagination. This article examines and interprets the generation, dissemination, and cross-cultural translation of images of the capital city in the West through Newhoff’s visual texts. It argues that the images of the capital city are not only symbols of imperial rule, but also inspire the awakening of Western humanistic spirit and the shift towards modernization of state polity.
