Professor Xu Guozhang was not only an eminent linguist but also an outstanding literary critic.Known as a Milton-Shelley scholar,he broke new ground in Emerson and Lu Xun studies late in his life.As one of his assistants,the author reminisces Xu's linguistic classes with frequent reference to literature and his essays on Emerson and Lu Xun,admiring his rigorous scholarship,unique insights,and determined opposition to drifting with the tide and going for quick success.Xu's legacy has benefitted the author throughout his career.
