Literary cartography runs through the core of Robert Tally’s study of literary space, using cartography as a metaphor for literary writing, revealing the relationship between the subject of cartography and the space in which it is situated,as well as the organization of space on a larger scale, and exploring the ways in which literature characterizes and constructs this wholeness.A Raisin in the Sun draws on literary cartography to explore the cartographic motivations and behaviors of its characters in relation to the geographical metaphors of the maps they draw.By mapping the black family’s travels on a map of the United States,Hansberry analyzes the Younger’s cartographic anxiety and the resultant cartographic practices in the space/place transition and reveals the racial antagonisms, the will to power and identity politics that underlie the map they draw. The analysis of literary cartography and geographical metaphors in the work serves as both a discussion of the relationship between individuals and space and a reflection on the existence and future destiny of the Black race, reflecting Hansberry’s literary practice and concern for reality.
