William Gibson combines big data with popular culture in Idoru, imagining a consumer society filled with simulacra. The novel revolves around the impossible binary marriage between the pop star Rez and the virtual idol Rei Toei, unfolding through the dual narratives of the genius analyst Laney and the young fan Chia seeking the truth, and shows the impact of technology on traditional ethical spaces, subjects, and relationships. The two ethical threads represented by Laney and Chia embody different ethical perspectives and choices;Laney questions the subjectivity of the“desiring machine,”while the youth like Chia yearn for the virtual space generated by pseudo-sensory technology.Amidst the conflict and tension between the old and new ethics, the novel challenges traditional modes of marriage and social interaction spaces with cyber technology on the one hand, yet still offers a warmth and humanistic concern in the punk spirit. In the end,the open-ended conclusion offers the possibility of untying the“ethical knot”of the binary marriage by breaking down the space barriers between humans and simulacra, metaphorically highlighting the man-machine union by marriage,as an information revolution embraces the post-ethical selection era.
