Virginia Woolf witnessed the emergence of“statue mania”in the 19th century and expressed her discontent with Britain’s utilization of“war heroes”statues to propagate patriotism, heroism, and militarism during the two World Wars.In her works,Woolf criticizes hypocritical British propaganda through the portrayal of the Cavell statue and illuminates the complicit role undertaken by certain women in the war discourse constructed by heroism through the depiction of the Achilles statue. In response,Woolf embraces the ethos of fraternity and universal human values, epitomized by an envisioned“flaming Goddess”statue,in order to dismantle the dominant discourse advocating for warfare, thereby elucidating her contemplations on the prevention of war and the attainment of peace.
