This paper explores how Sappho,a lyric poet of ancient Greece, entered the literary imaginations of the twentieth-century China and Japan. In the process of being introduced, imitated and reshaped,Sappho participated in the dialogues with the national traditions, the transforming societies, and people who stood on the threshold between the past and the present. She thus became an integral part of modern Chinese and Japanese literatures. Her journey in East Asia,on the other hand, also manifests the making of the tradition of modern Chinese and Japanese literature respectively,as well as the literary exchanges between China and Japan.
