On the Innovative Thoughts of Yan Hui, the Second Sage

颜子在道德、政治、哲学等方面的思想主张闪耀着熠熠光辉。颜子天资聪睿、思维缜密、虚怀若谷、躬行践履、慎言敏行,对儒家学说有着重要的创新与发展。颜子提出“仁者自爱”的修身思想、“人不善我,我亦善之”的博爱思想和“天下咸获永宁”的政治理想。颜子坚持“大道天下莫能容,君子仍退而修之,推而行之”的人生哲学,辩证解读“易理”,把《周易》在很大程度上变成“穷神知化”预言未来的科学,其精神境界达到了“人道合一”的坐忘境界。正是颜子卓越的创新思想才奠定了他在中国思想史上、文化史上的崇高地位。

Yan Hui has brilliant thoughts in morality,politics,and philosophy.Endowed with intelligence,meticulous thinking,humility,practical action,and cautious yet efficient speech,he has made significant innovations and developments to the Confucian doctrine.He proposed the self-cultivation concept of"benevolence is self-love"and practiced the idea of benevolence throughout his life.He introduced the concept of universal love of"kind to others who are not kind to oneself."His proposal of the political ideal of"achieving eternal peace to the human kind through the promotion of morality and benevolence"became a shared vision among later men with lofty ideals for constructing a"Great Harmony Society."He presented the philosophy of life that"when the great way cannot be accommodated by the world,the gentleman should retreat and cultivate it,then promote and practice it."He interpreted the principles of"Yi Ching"dialectically,transforming it largely into a science of"understanding the mysteries of change,"and"accurately foreseeing the future."Furthermore,Yan Hui achieved the forgetting state of self-cultivation of"leaving the physical form,getting rid of what occupies my mind,and becoming one with the universe,"thus internalizing the Confucian principles of"benevolence,righteousness,propriety,and music"into the forgetfulness of"oneness of humanity and the universe."It is precisely these outstanding innovative thoughts of Yan Hui that have established his high position in the history of Chinese thought and culture.
