The study of the English translation and circulation of San Guo Yan Yi(Romance of the Three Kingdoms),the earliest of the Four Great Classical Novels to be written and translated into English,is of great significance to the international transmission of Chinese culture. The British sinologist Steele’s The Logomachy, published in 1905,brought the English translation of San Guo Yan Yi into the era of single-volume editions. For a long time, there have been few studies on Steele and his translation works.Aiming to fill the research gap and discover the value of Steele’s works, and using Bourdieu’s theory of social practice, this study extensively collects first-hand English literature, and examines the impact of Steele’s The Logomachy and its circulation on the international transmission of Chinese culture, focusing on the background of Steele’s arrival in China, the features and dissemination of his translation. The language of Steele’s translation is concise and clear, highlighting the heterogeneity of Chinese culture;advertisements and reviews of the book were also published, actively promoting the translation and circulation of the novel. However, the dissemination of the translation version in the West is more sporadic, which is influenced by the abridgment of the works, the translator’s habits, and social capital.
