The Two Gentlemen of Verona, one of Shakespeare's earliest plays,is notable for two aspects.Firstly,it is often regarded by critics as one of Shakespeare's less accomplished plays.Secondly,it includes a pair of roles,Proteus's servant Launce and his dog,Crab. This paper analyzes the role of the dog,the comedic stage tradition and the contemporary understandings of animals, aiming to explore the relationships between humans and dogs,as well as between masters and servants.
