Study of the Chinese and English Versions of Li Ji(Li Chi)'s 1926 Survey Report on the Fen River Valley

1926年2~4月,清华学校与美国弗利尔美术馆(Freer Gallery of Art)合作,由李济在山西南部的汾河流域做了一次50多天的考古调查。这次调查是中国学者首次独立进行的考古工作,发现了著名的西阴村遗址,也是李济从人类学向考古学的转折点、考古事业的起点。

From February to April 1926,Li Ji(Li Chi)conducted archaeological survey in the Fen River valley in southern Shanxi.That same year,he submitted an English survey report to the Freer Gallery of Art in the United States.The following year a significantly abridged version of this report was published in Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections.However,it was not translated into Chinese until 1983.Little known is the fact that the original manuscript of Li Ji's report is still preserved in the Freer Gallery of Art.Compared to the published survey report,the original manuscript contains many important new materials,which are of great significance for studying the objectives of the Fen River survey and Li Ji's scholarly thought.
