Wang Shen, courtesy name Jinqing, was a descendant of Wang Quanbin,a founding hero of the Northern Song Dynasty. He married the eldest princess of Shu and so held the title of Commandant-escort(fuma duwei).Wang Shen was passionate about the collection and appreciation of calligraphic works and paintings, amassing a substantial collection. He built a dedicated hall, the Baohui Hall,to house his treasures in the eastern part of his private residence.Investigations reveal that Wang Shen often stamped unique and peculiar seals or signatures on the ancient books and famous paintings that he acquired. This penchant for the unusual and extraordinary in his seals is consistent with his aesthetic preferences and collecting principles.Additionally,Wang Shen was known to stamp forged seals of other collectors on the paintings and calligraphic works in his collection,in order to enhance their value.
