FUELLING WEST CHINA DEVELOPMENT China Economic Weekly 30 October China’s vast western region,encompassing 12 provincial-level regions-including Sichuan,Chongqing,and Xinjiang-is vital to the country’s overall development.The region accounts for 21.5 percent of China’s GDP.Although its economic development has historically lagged behind the booming eastern coastal areas,its development has picked up pace in recent years,especially since the implementation of a regional development strategy under which some industries are being moved to the resource-rich west from the eastern region.
