This article presents an interview with Dutch professor Herman Paul,a prominent contemporary philosopher of history and historian of historiography.Having studied under the esteemed Dutch philosopher of history,Frank Ankersmit,Professor Paul has contributed significantly to the field by incorporating the virtue language into historical theory and history of historiography,notably introducing the concept of"Scholarly Personae"to illuminate the complexities of historical practices.The interview traces how Herman Paul immersed himself into the field of historical theory,explores the connotation of his advocacy for"the history of historiography and the philosophy of history",discusses his current project on the history of virtues and vices,exhibits his perspectives on the trend of present historical theory,and offers his suggestions for Chinese scholars interested in Western historical theory and history of historiography.Through this dialogue,the article offers valuable insights into Professor Paul's scholarly contributions and provides a glimpse into the forefront of contemporary research in historical theory.
