Gold Mirrors and Tongue Reflections, translated by Ioannis Solos,a Greek Chinese medicine expert,is currently the only known foreign-language version of the classics of tongue diagnosis. He translated the two monographs on tongue diagnosis,Scholar Ao's Gold Mirror Records in Cold Damage and Tongue Reflection in Cold Damage,as a holistic system in one book. His version exhibits distinct features of Thick Translation.Under the perspective of Thick Translation and through the study of its peritext,it is found that the translator provides the reader with deep contextualization and a smooth reading experience of the“thick”version through a combination of various annotation forms, including in-text thick translation and out-of-text thick translation. His adoption of the strategy of thick translation imbues the work with three essential functions:sorting out the theoretical system, promoting cultural exchange, and creating an academic translation. It holds reference value for future translations of classical Chinese medicine texts.
