Xi Zhongxun has made outstanding contributions to the preservation of China’s cultural heritage.His practice of cultural heritage protection can be divided into four periods.During the War of Liberation,he took the lead in advocating the protection of ancient documents and precious relics in northwest China.In the early years of the founding of the People’s Republic of China,when he was in charge of Northwest China,he proposed the establishment of a cultural relics department and gave instructions for the protection of the Xi’an City Wall,the South Pagoda of Tang Huiche Temple,and the Beilin Museum.During the period of comprehensive socialist development,he served in the central government and issued a large number of documents on cultural heritage preservation.After the reform and opening up,he actively participated in the protection of cultural relics such as the Great Wall,the Old Summer Palace,Lin Zexu’sformer residence and cemetery,as well as intangible cultural heritage such as Qinqiang Opera and Agongqiang Opera.This article summarizes Xi Zhongxun’s thoughts on cultural relics protection,which include attaching importance to the historical value and educational function of cultural heritage,emphasizing the protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage,and proposing scientific ideas and methods for cultural heritage preservation.These forward-looking ideas and practices still have great theoretical value and practical relevance in contemporary times.
