Being one of the outstanding representatives of modernist short story writers in the early 20th century,Katherine Mansfield has made an indelible contribution to the development of the English short stories, attracting increasingly extensive and profound research from scholars both home and abroad. However, few domestic scholars have delved into the Gothic elements in her works. This paper takes Mansfield's The Woman at the Store,Ole Underwood and Millie as the starting point, offering a concise interpretation of the Gothic elements employed by the author in these three short stories from the depiction of the original natural environment and suspense setting, psychological portrayal and characterization of the protagonists, choice of minor characters, and thematic contrast.By employing the Gothic elements in her writing,Mansfield clearly expresses her thoughts about praising virtue and punishing vice, strongly condemning the dual devastation of colonial frontier life on people's spirits and bodies. In the meanwhile, she also expresses her infinite sympathy for and close attention to those from the bottom of the society.
