摘要
This paper presents the essential role of culture in the creation of meaning of language-in-use, showing it to be the source of both the contextual shaping of a particular text and the fundamentalcore of beliefs and values from which contemporary contextual features derive. As a result of thisessential relationship, it is argued, modern language learners need to master the cultural system as wellas the linguistic system of their new language if they are to be able to use it competently in real life, asmost intend today. Samples of texts are examined to show how the meanings of both context and coreculture are naturally embedded in ordinary language and suggestions are provided for how these might besuccessfully brought to students' attention and mastery in a classroom.
