'The stranger'is a character type typical of the 20th century literature.The following article gives an analysis of two such characters:Conroy Gabriel in James Joyce's The Dead and Fang Hongjian in Qian Zhongshu's The City Besieged.By illustrating the exact senses in which the two char- acters are'the strangers',the article hopefully shows how the stories become two case studies into the existential situations of modern man.
