This paper expounds the meaning and representation of traffic volume, discusses the non-uniform characteristics of traffic volume in time and space, the methods of observation, conversion and prediction of traffic volume, and summarizes the types of traffic volume and its role in road planning and design. The definition of hourly traffic volume and the method of determining hourly traffic volume are studied in depth. Finally, an example of a proposed urban expressway is analyzed, and the calculation process of one-way design hour traffic volume in a long-term year is determined.
