On the Role of English Ability of Business English Graduates in Economic Benefit: A Language Economics View

通过对商务英语专业毕业生进行问卷调查,并利用明瑟方程分析数据,结果发现:他们的英语能力与其经济收益呈现显著正相关,但相关率随着入职时间的增加而降低。再以外贸行业为例,基于语言经济学角度进行研究,发现:1.英语能力是通过行业劳动力市场内的"语言歧视"现象来影响调查对象的经济收益的;2.英语能力经济收益随着职业发展而降低。原因有两个,一是职业的发展使英语能力的经济收益形势发生改变,即直接经济收益慢慢转化为间接经济收益;二是行业人才市场内英语人力资本供给速度快于需求速度。

This paper analyzes the economic benefit of English ability with the help of Mincer equation.It shows that there is a notable positive correlation between Business English Graduates' English ability and their economic benefit,and this correlation ratio will drop along with their career development. By taking the foreign trade industry,we conduct an analysis based on language economics and find: 1. Business English Graduates' English ability influences their economic benefit with a pattern called 'Language Discrimination';2. There are two reasons that can explain why the above-mentioned positive correlation ratio will drop along with the respondents' career development:( 1) The changes of English ability's beneficial form during the development of employers' career;( 2) The speed of supply of English human capital outpaces the demand.
