The Gate of Heavenly Peace: the Chinese and Their Revolution, 1895—1980, written by Jonathan D. Spence, is an influential historical study, and also a case study of Ding Ling, a renowned contemporary Chinese writer. This book treats the dialogue between the margin and the mainstream, and is concerned with the helplessness and struggle of humanity. The focus of representation is on the relationship between humans and history. After an analysis of Jonathan D. Spence's study of Ding Ling and a comparison with the domestic Ding Ling research, we conclude that The Gate of Heavenly Peace is written as a complicated long chain of history, literature, and culture, in which the Ding Ling study is undoubtedly the most outstanding part of it. Jonathan D. Spence's Ding Ling study from the perspective of the other not only offers a valuable reference for literary study, but also constitutes the foundation for cultural exchange and comparison. Furthermore, it is of great significance for us to examine the image of China in the dialogue of world culture.
