Francis Vetch and Henri Vetch's Contribution to Sinology in Peking

魏智及法文图书馆为近代来华西方人所熟知,其汉学出版曾激发西方知识界对故都北平与中国社会政治的学术兴趣。但不可忽视的是法文图书馆的开创者为魏智之父魏池。他的波折人生与京津两地法文图书馆的早期发展密切相关。本文综合人物行迹、书籍出版和社会交往,勾勒魏池父子身世、出版事业的兴衰,梳理不同时期出版物的内在关联,进而在知识生产与传播的层面,阐明他们的汉学出版对民国时期北平汉学发展的贡献。

Henri Vetch and his French Bookstore was once a household word for Europeans in China. The Sinological books he published aroused great interest among Europeans in the ancient capital Peking and the social and political life of China. But it cannot be ignored that the founder of the French Bookstore & Publishing House was Henri's father Francis Vetch. His life of twists and turns was closely related to the early development of the bookstore in Peking and Tianjin. Based on research on the Francis and Henri's publishing and social activities, I attempt to outline their personal lives, the rise and fall of the French Bookstore as well as the interrelationship between publications in different periods, and further clarify the influence of their publishing work to the developments of Sinology in Peking.
