19世纪西方在华传教士眼中的新旧印刷方式——以传教士英文著述为中心

Protestant Missionaries’ Perceptions of Chinese and Western Printing Technologies in Nineteenth-Century China

本文使用新发现的一手英文史料,通过梳理19世纪西方在华传教士对新旧印刷方式利弊的思考和评价,研究其引入现代印刷技术的动因。研究发现,19世纪在华传教士认为铅合金中文活字印刷术具有综合优势,特别是在提高印刷质量方面作用明显。

Using newly discovered,first-hand English materials,this article examines Western Protestant missionaries’evaluations of the advantages and disadvantages of traditional Chinese printing technology,and studies the reasons for the introduction of modern printing technology and comes to a conclusion that missionaries in China in the 19 th century held the view that the lead-alloy Chinese movable-type printing had comprehensive advantages,especially in improving the print quality,and broke the Chinese monopoly of publishing technologies.
