The Past, Present and Future of Communication Studies

在中国新闻史学会2018年学术年会上,美国南加州大学安纳伯格传播与新闻学院教授、国际传播学会前主席Larry Gross做主旨演讲。在此次演讲中,Gross通过梳理人类传播的过去、现在和将来,描述了媒介与社会各个维度互动发展的历史宏图,并强调了媒介在创造和维护全球经济中的核心作用,及其对人类文化生产的深远影响。随着人类传播技术的发展,信息化和数字化成为新的支配全球传播的力量,Gross对麦克卢汉"地球村"的概念提出了修正,并进一步指出要真正应对我们共同的文化环境的沉沦,揭示和反思"不合时宜的真相"已刻不容缓。

Larry Gross,professor at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at University of Southern California,made a keynote speech at the 2018 annual conference of the Chinese National Association of History for Journalism and Communication.After outlining the long history of human communication,especially the importance of communicative activities and communication systems in shaping society at large,Gross emphasized the pivotal role media and communications have played in supporting and expanding global capitalism.As for the future direction of the field,Gross pointed out that although digital technologies have become the dominant mode of communication today,it is still and has become even more crucial for criticalscholars to uncover,expose,and teach the workings of the global corporate media system in degrading and polluting the planetary environments in both physical and cultural senses.
