Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann has a special affinity for Jules Massenet's Werther.This sentimental poet suits his dark timbre and introvert style.After several seasons of German and Italian operas,he finally brought this role to the Metropolitan Opera.The new production directed by Richard Eyre is a naturalistic one,with a realistic set of the inner living space and vivid video projection to reflect his nature,which is so important to Werther.But it's the passionate singing of Kaufmann and Sophie Koch,who portrayed Werther's paramour Charlotte,that made the production so hot.
