Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites premiered in Milan's La Scala and the Paris Opera in 1957.Not only is the subject thoughtful and serious,it has been recognized as the best among Poulenc's operatic output of three(the other two being Les mamelles de Tiresias and La voix humaine),confirming the composer's status as the leading figure of 20th-century French opera.
