Cardillac,Hindemith's fifth opera,premiered in Dresden in 1926.Being the composer's first full-length opera,it was constructed in the style of Baroque counterpoint,employing an extended chamber orchestra·Hindemith adopted fugues,contrapuntal techniques,concerto grossos,passacaglias and the other polyphonic forms in the opera,but listeners are still struck by the modern qualities of the music.This work does not contain conventional passions or plots that twist and turn usually found in the opera genre.In many ways,Cardillac was more of a conceptual experiment.
